ORIENTEERING

Meriç ARAZOĞLU

What is Orienteering?

Orienteering is an outdoor sport in which participants use a map and compass to find pre-determined control points in a mapped area (forest, park, campus, city, etc.). On an orienteering map, a triangle symbolises the starting point, circles represent control points and nested double circles symbolise the finishing point. Numbered orange and white flags are placed in the terrain to indicate the correct location to the competitors. Competitors prove that they have reached the control points using a punch or an electronic control system. Depending on the type of event, checkpoints may be sequential or random. There are no signs directing competitors to control points; competitors determine their own routes.

Individual orienteering race

Individual orienteering is a type of orienteering competition in which competitors try to find control points on the map in sequence and in the shortest possible time. The competition is governed by the rules of the International Orienteering Federation. Competitors start at the start and finish at the finish. All control points marked on the map must be visited in the correct order. Athletes must ensure they are at the correct control by checking the number on the flag at each control. Athletes must use the system available (punch or electronic control system) at each checkpoint they visit. The athlete who finds the checkpoints in sequence and reaches the finish line in the shortest time wins the race.

Team Score Orienteering Race

The Team Score Orienteering Race is a type of orienteering competition in which competitors attempt to find pre-marked checkpoints on the map in random order and return to the starting point in the shortest time possible. Each team consists of 3-4 members, depending on the number of participants. All team members will assemble at the designated rally point and the race will start and finish at the same location. Each team will be given the same map according to the number of members in the team and the timer will be started. The teams will plan the distribution of the control points marked on the map to each team member equally. (Each team is provided with a pencil for marking during the planning process.) Care should be taken to ensure that no control points are left unmarked during the planning process. Once the control points have been distributed, the team members should begin to find their assigned control points in random order. Once they have found all their assigned control points, they should return to the starting point as quickly as possible and record the time of the team whose members all reach the meeting point. The team that finds all the checkpoints and returns to the rally in the shortest time wins the race.
